Bio and History
Zimmer Farms history dates back to the late thirties and early forties when the farms founder Chet Zimmer constructed the first of several poultry barns on his property along the Kings Creek in Gallupville and began selling eggs throughout the area. He expanded his enterprise to include the sale of baby chicks which he bred and incubated here at the farm and sold to many of the local farmers to renew their flocks each spring. It was only with the advent of the modern giant caged chicken factories during the fifties and sixties that it became impossible for Mr. Zimmer to compete and operate profitably any longer as a small farming business. In the late sixties, he had to make the hard choice to shut the farm down completely.
The barns and land lay fallow and free of chickens until about ten years ago when my wife and I first acquired the property. That first year we bought just twelve chickens in the spring for fun, and then fifty the next year and then a hundred the following and so on. It is only because of the the increasing awareness and understanding of the importance of the source and the quality of the food that we are eating that it is possible to bring this old farm back into operation. But of course there is a lot more to this story, stop by the farm sometime and we can fill in the bits and pieces of how me and my wife wound up becoming chicken farmers.
