Bio and History
Peacetree began in 2000 as a glorified cold frame in my backyard, where I started seedlings to sell to folks who were looking for organic, out-of-the-ordinary vegetable plants. The first year I grew about 75 different kinds of vegetables and herbs and a few flowers. Over the years, my husband expanded that cold frame and then built a solar greenhouse.
The original selection has now grown to include over 250 varieties of plants, all hardy for the northeast (USDA zones 4-5). The majority are tasty vegetable seedlings, ready to plant in your home garden. There are 50 different tomato varieties alone, many of which are hard-to-find heirlooms that have been chosen for their great flavors, diverse shapes and colors, and by request. (Some of the veggies are listed on Slow Food´s Ark of Taste. Check out the Slow Food website for some thoughts and connections about good, clean and fair food.) The vegetables are supplemented by a wide variety of culinary herbs, as well as a few herbs for medicinal purposes. Rounding out the array is a selection of fragrant, antique, or just plain pretty flowers.
With the economy the way it is (and even when it improves) there´s no better way to enjoy feeding ourselves than through home gardens. If you love to garden, but don´t have the time or space for starting your own seedlings, there´s a place right here in Schoharie County to find the plants you need for a delicious, lovely garden in your own backyard.
