Schoharie County --- Rolling Hills and Rich History

Graceful rolling hills quilted with fields of corn, hay and grains and dotted with dairy cattle surround tidy main streets of towns and villages steeped in historic charm. Farm stands boasting the freshest fruits and vegetables and festivals celebrating local growers are abundant. Schoharie County has something to offer everyone. Our products are made the old-fashioned way … with generations of expertise, time-honored tradition, and love.
Agriculture has long been our number one industry. From the bread-basket of the American Revolution to today´s robust farm stands and farmer´s markets, families have toiled for generations to maintain a lifestyle that strengthens community. Bountiful farming traditions lend naturally to rich handicraft and artisan traditions. Our crafters and artisans produce goods with the same skill and attention their forebears did, passing to our children an American-made way of life that is rapidly disappearing.
Schoharie County’s tourism history dates back to the roaring ‘20s when the mineral springs of Sharon drew wealthy New York City residents to our relaxing natural spas. Even today, attractions like Howe Caverns, Palatine House, the Old Stone Fort Museum, and the Sunshine Fair draw vacationers looking for a place that truly embodies traditional living.
OUR GOAL -
Our goal at SchoharieFarmer.com is to build a sustainable, concise listing of Schoharie County farms and small businesses in one easily accessible location so that vacationers and newcomers can find and experience the richness of our home. Because we believe in Schoharie County, we are funding this community service at no cost to the participants. It is our sincere hope to never need to charge those we seek to serve.
OUR CONTINUING VISION -
This website includes listings of local farms and other small, non-franchised businesses, agricultural festivals, events, and educational opportunities; provides an internet destination with information to encourage tourism; and supports visitors and newcomers with a guide to our robust local economy.
GET INVOLVED -
Each farm or business page contains a bio or short history, a map to your location, Farmer's Market location(s), or grocery location(s) where your goods are offered, and a guide to the products you carry. Photos are encouraged along with any other information you want to share. Businesses with current websites can be linked to your page here providing an additional presence on the internet and, hopefully, more traffic to your business. Once you've signed up and given us some information to list on your web page, you can email or call in any changes ... we´ll take care of the rest.

To be considered a FARM:
A "farm" is defined as [an area of land or water where particular animals such as angus beef, sheep, llamas and goats, poultry such as chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese, fish, or crops such as peaches, tomatoes, spices, corn, hay and blueberries are raised for commercial purposes (usually used in combination ); ie. a trout farm].
To be considered a SMALL, NON-FRANCHISE BUSINESS:
For our purposes, a small, non-franchise business will be defined as a business that is independently owned and operated, that is not dominant in its field of operation and has fewer than 500 employees. Independently owned franchise businesses already have the benefit of national marketing efforts. While we support our residents who run these businesses, we feel it would be unfair to lesser known businesses to include franchise operations here.
